Nestled in the shadow of Mount Ninderry, the Yandina area was first inhabited by Indigenous Australians, more than 40 thousand years ago.
The name “Yandina” comes from the aboriginal language – and means “go on foot”. And many did just that from the 1860s on, when the first Europeans began arriving, attracted by the opportunities offered by the emerging timber industry.
Yandina is the second-oldest town in our region, and lays claim to being home to the first commercial centre established on what was later to become known as the ‘Sunshine Coast.’ It also is home to the Coast’s oldest surviving hotel – offering respite and accommodation for the weary traveller.
Standing like a silent sentinel over the town, Mount Ninderry – which takes its name from the aboriginal language – meaning “Many Leeches” – now lends its name to Yandina's first exclusively online newspaper – the “Ninderry-Nicklin News”. Simply click on the link above to read our latest edition.
